Matchy-matchy is so over.
Whether you’re looking to refresh one room at a time–or redesign a few rooms at once–we always advise taking what we like to call a “whole house approach.”
It allows you to make decisions based on what’s in view from one room to the next to help create a cohesive look for your whole house. And no, that doesn’t mean everything in every room needs to match. Quite the opposite, really.
What you’re really looking to create is contrast and balance.
One way to do that is by integrating a mix of light and dark tones. Let’s say you have dark hardwood floors. Rather than selecting furniture to match them, consider lighter wood stained furniture to contrast with and balance the floors. The same concept holds true when choosing paint and upholstery colors, too.
The overarching theme in design right now is customization and making a space your own. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different wooden chair styles at the same table or to mix modern pieces with antique ones. Choose an area rug that combines but doesn’t perfectly match the surrounding colors and decor. And, of course, we always recommend choosing handmade furnishings over anything mass-produced.
Above all, remember creating a home you love takes time. We’d love to help!
