The Story Behind the Store

About Our Owners

After a flood destroyed Kim and Steve Murphy’s home and furniture, they set out to rebuild their home with quality, hand-crafted furniture made in the USA. When they came away from their search in Houston unsuccessful, the idea for The Amish Craftsman was born.

A native Houstonian, Kim worked as an environmental consultant, but always dreamed of owning a small business. Steve was in the advertising business. After her brother, Darren’s, experience with the Amish and their quality products, the pieces began to fall into place. The Amish Craftsman opened in December of 2006.

Kim and Steve are both proud Aggies and Houstonians. When not at work, Kim enjoys gardening, biking, reading and hiking and basically anything that is outdoors related. Steve is an avid sports fan and also enjoys the outdoors. An ideal day for him would consist of fishing, a round of golf and catching a game of any sport. Both of them love the city of Houston and can’t imagine living anywhere else, but a quick trip to New Orleans or Galveston is always a highly anticipated getaway. They have two puppies, Ruthie (a former supermodel) and Petey (a champion sporting beagle, now comfortably retired) who pretty much run the household.

Over the years, The Amish Craftsman has been fortunate to have grown and our team has expanded as well. Every team member cares that our customers have the best furniture buying experience possible and we all strive to make our customers excited about coming back to buy their next heirloom piece of furniture from The Amish Craftsman.
