At The Amish Craftsman, over the years, we have helped thousands of people choose just the right pieces for their homes and we’ve compiled the following tips that can make the process a little easier.
1.Take your measurements. As the old saying goes, measure twice, cut once. Same goes for buying furniture. You want to be sure the furniture will fit in your space and accommodate all of your needs. It can be as simple as cutting cardboard to scale and placing it on the floor, or using graph paper to lay it out. Painter’s tape always works too. There are some good rules of thumb. For instance, a 6 ft table seats 6 people, 8 ft seats 8 and 10 ft seats 10. Also, you want to allow for 2-3ft around the perimeter of your table, and high traffic lanes or walkways in your home need to be around 3 ft.
2.Keep your lifestyle in mind. Remember this is your home – your furniture has to be comfortable and practical. Frank Lloyd Wright said, “Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” We all have kids, pets and friends that we want to enjoy our homes and our furniture. You want to be sure to pick pieces that are beautiful, yet also fit your lifestyle.
3.Bring samples if you can. When choosing woods and stains you want to consider your lighting and the color palette of your home. We encourage you to bring whatever you can to the store to help make your decision. Paint, fabric and flooring samples can make a world of difference. If you are trying to match a piece you have, try to bring a drawer, table leaf or shelf.
4. Invest in quality. We believe that furniture is something you should only have to buy once. It is better to buy lifetime pieces, one at a time than to buy a whole room of furniture at one go that you might not like or want a year from now. Our furniture isn’t “throw away” furniture, it is built to be passed down from one generation to the next. We’ve had many customers come to purchase our Amish furniture after they had spent thousands of dollars on imported furniture that didn’t last more than a couple of years. It is better to buy it once and have it forever.
A lot of our customers buy one piece at a time, room by room. That is just fine by us. Because we are working directly with the Amish craftsmen we will always be able to get the pieces you need to finish your room. Our stain formula is certified so you can be sure it will match.
5.Take your time. We aren’t here to pressure you, but to help. We’ve found it normally take 2-3 visits to the store before our customers are ready to buy. This isn’t an impulse purchase. Ask questions, get advice, get dimensions and let us help you find the furniture that is right for you.
